Light Theories Part 1

Light Theories Part 1

I love Shel Silverstein; I love his poems. I love how he knocks sense into you using poetry written in a book that’s found at the Children section.

Everytime I’ve raced my shadow
When the sun was at my back,
It always ran ahead of me.
But every time I’ve raced my shadow
When my face was toward the sun,
I won.

– Shel Silverstein (Shadow Race)

Awhile ago, while I was walking on the way home, I noticed the lit streetlamps and the shadows on the road the light made of me. I noticed that the farther I was from the streetlamp (with my back facing it), the longer and bigger my shadow was in front of me. I wouldn’t be able to see my shadow, of course, while I walked towards the light. And obviously, when I was directly under the light, my shadow was at its smallest size, completely under me.

There’s something to be observed here. In many ways, when we race against—or wrestle with—our shadows in life, it doesn’t matter so much how fast or how hard we’re running—or punching; what matters is where we’re facing.

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

– John  8:12 (NIV)

Run to the light.

  1. Eric, I can’t believe that you wrote this way back in 2007. I remember reading this when you first posted it. Tapos, ganun na pala katagal yun. 3 years na!? Haha. Parang kahapon lang…. Haha.

    1. Lay! Onga eh. Can’t believe it myself. It’s amazing how so much has already happened since then! I mean, did you ever think you’d be where you are now three years ago? Haha. 🙂

Oh, by the way, it’s too bad you and Stef weren’t able to make it tonight. Next time! 🙂
